In the world of financial advising, technology is often seen as a means to an end, a tool to streamline processes and enhance efficiency. However, for Jason Barber, the founder and CEO of Holistic Planning, technology is a transformative force, reshaping the very nature of the industry. His journey from Edward Jones to the independent space has been a revelation, highlighting the shortcomings of the current tech landscape and inspiring him to build a revolutionary solution: HolisticOS, an AI-powered operating system designed to redefine the way financial advisors work.
A Frustrating Reality
Barber's experience at Edward Jones was a stark contrast to the reality he faced in the independent space. He recalls, "As someone who came from Edward Jones, I was super excited about all the technology, spent a ton of time doing all this due diligence. My honest opinion is that when you net it all out, I thought that it was actually a downgrade technology-wise moving from Edward Jones to the independent space."
The issue was not just the integration of various systems but the sheer number of logins required to perform even the most basic tasks. He laments, "The entire concept of a ‘tech stack,’ he says, is dead. When I hear the word integration, I’m like, ‘No, I don’t want that anymore. Integration is like duct tape.’"
This frustration is not uncommon among financial advisors. The current system is fragmented, with each custodian and technology provider offering a piece of the puzzle, but not the complete picture. The result is a disjointed experience, where advisors juggle multiple platforms, each with its own learning curve and limitations.
The Birth of HolisticOS
Barber's solution to this problem is HolisticOS, a unified platform that brings together all the essential functions an advisor needs. "Altruist is changing that," he says. "And so with our software, we’re going to have what are called real-time APIs into our software where we’re going to be able to send money, move money, place trades, update beneficiaries, open accounts, all that kind of stuff inside of our software without ever having to log into Altruist. That’s like the holy grail."
The platform is built using Claude, Anthropic’s AI tool, and it integrates seamlessly with Altruist, Microsoft, and Zoom. This real-time connectivity is a game-changer, eliminating the need for multiple logins and providing a unified view of the client's financial landscape.
A Vision for the Future
HolisticOS is not just a technological innovation; it is a vision for the future of financial advising. Barber envisions a world where advisors can focus on what they do best: providing personalized, holistic advice to their clients. "In my opinion, the future of financial advising is about creating a seamless, integrated experience for the client," he says.
The platform is designed to be accessible to in-house advisors at Holistic Planning and Uptick Partners, as well as unaffiliated RIAs interested in purchasing it. It will officially launch at the Future Proof Festival in September, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of financial technology.
The Power of AI
The integration of AI into HolisticOS is a key differentiator. The platform has its own AI agent, which enables it to learn and adapt to the needs of the advisor and the client. This AI agent is not just a tool; it is a partner, working alongside the advisor to provide insights and recommendations that enhance the client experience.
Barber is clear about the potential of AI: "What makes this particularly fascinating is the way AI can transform the advisor-client relationship. It’s not just about automating tasks; it’s about creating a more personalized, efficient, and effective experience for the client."
A New Paradigm
HolisticOS represents a new paradigm in financial advising, one where technology is not just a tool but a transformative force. It is a vision that challenges the status quo and inspires a new generation of advisors to think differently about the role of technology in their practice.
In the end, HolisticOS is not just a software platform; it is a statement of intent. It is a declaration that the future of financial advising is not about managing multiple systems and platforms but about creating a seamless, integrated experience for the client. It is a call to action for the industry to embrace the power of technology and reimagine the way financial advice is delivered.
As Barber says, "If you take a step back and think about it, this is not just about building a better tech stack. It’s about creating a new paradigm for the industry, one where technology is not just a tool but a partner in the advisor-client relationship."
In my opinion, HolisticOS is a significant step forward in the evolution of financial technology. It is a testament to the power of innovation and the potential of AI to transform the way we work. As the platform launches, it will be fascinating to see how it shapes the future of financial advising and inspires a new generation of advisors to think differently about the role of technology in their practice.
