Giro d'Italia 2026: Stage 9 Recap - Vingegaard's Strong Climb, Eulálio's Pink Jersey Defense (2026)

The 2026 Giro d'Italia is shaping up to be a thrilling race, with the general classification standings after Stage 9 revealing a tightly contested battle for the overall title. Jonas Vingegaard, the current leader, has extended his lead over Felix Gall by 35 seconds, but he remains 2:24 minutes behind Afonso Eulálio, who is in the lead. This means that the race is far from over, and the time trial could still shake things up.

One of the most interesting developments is the rise of Jai Hindley, who has moved up to fourth place, and the strong performance of Christian Scaroni, who is now fifth overall. Thymen Arensman and Mathys Rondel have also made significant gains, while Ben O'Connor has shed important seconds. Giulio Pellizzari, however, has had a bad day and lost meaningful time to his direct rivals.

Enric Mas and Jan Christen have officially dropped out of the GC contention, while Igor Arrieta has also lost several positions. Davide Piganzoli, on the other hand, has climbed up to 13th place with a stellar third-place finish on the day. Derek Gee and Egan Bernal will look to climb into the Top 10 on the more climber-friendly second half of the race.

In the points classification, the sprinters have held back, with Paul Magnier once again covering the attacks of Jonathan Milan. Stage 6 winner Davide Ballerini won the day's first intermediate sprint, winning 12 points and coming quite close to Milan. The points classification remains rather similar, with Magnier in the lead.

For the King of the Mountains standings, Jonas Vingegaard has won the summit finish to Corno alle Scale and has gathered 100 points on two climbs. His lead has skyrocketed up and is now of 51 points over Diego Pablo Sevilla, while Felix Gall sits third. Einer Rubio has moved up to fourth and is possibly signaling his intentions to target the jersey.

In the Youth Classification, Afonso Eulálio has extended his gap over his rivals in the battle for the white jersey. He now has over 5 minutes over his closest rival, Mathys Rondel, while Giulio Pellizzari's bad day has thrown him down to third. The gaps remain very close as we are yet to reach a multi-mountain stage.

In the Team Classification, there is a change of leader due to Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe's dreadful day. Team Visma | Lease a Bike has taken the lead, now with 1:44 minutes over the German team, while the gaps back to Movistar and Astana have also grown significantly. The race is far from over, and the time trial could still shake things up.
